The first score
for each pupil is his entering score. All scores are from
Gilmore Oral Reading test. Numbers represent grade levels.
In the first case, Tony W. entered the program in 1971 with
a reading level of third grade, fifth month, and left it after
three years of training reading at ninth grade, seventh month.
Wherever a student stayed less than a year in the program,
his number of lessons is indicated. O.S. represents
off scale on the Gilmore, or over 9.8.
Most of the students
were scheduled for three lessons a week, but attendance varied
widely. Spelling results were poor. Most students learned
to read quite cred itably, but their spelling usually went
from atrocious to merely bad.

Reading gains

Students were tutored five
time a week, 45 minutes per lesson, two at a time. Numbers
represent reading grade levels: 3.7 would mean third grade,
seventh month. O.S. is off scale on the Gilmore Reading
Test, or above 9.8. Grades represent the grade of the student
when he entered the program.
